Surgery Most orthodontic problems can be
corrected with braces, but some cases need both orthodontics and corrective surgery.
In correcting craniofacial skeletal abnormalities, orthognathic surgery repositions the
jaw and reshapes the face. This surgery is performed when severe facial growth
discrepancies have caused improper alignment of the jaws and facial bones. The upper
and lower teeth do not meet, therefore resulting in bite problems which cannot be
corrected with braces alone.
The orthodontist works in conjunction with an orthognathic
surgeon to evaluate and prepare those patients who elect to have surgery performed.
With the aid of computer generated imagery, Dr. Cavalancia and his staff are able to
predict how a patient will look following the surgery. |
